Hsinta Thermal Power Plant
The Hsinta Power Plant (The Plant) is one of the coal-fired and CCGT power plants owned by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) with a total installed capacity of 4,300 MW. It was established in 1980 and is located in the Southern Taiwan.
To mitigate the impact of carbon emissions on the environment, Taipower has invested in many advanced pollution control facilities in the Hisnta Power Plant Since 1992:
After the installation of ESP, FGD, and SCR additional in the Plant, the emission intensity of particulate pollutants were reduced from 91.2 kg /GWH in 1998 to 28.2 kg /GWH in 2007, SO2 emissions from 3,628 kg /GWH in 1997 to 516 kg /GWH in 2007, and NOx emissions from 2,202 kg /GWH in 1997 to 824 kg/GWH in 2007.

The four coal domes with 180,000 metric tons each, completed in 2007, can cut down 99.29% of fugitive coal dust emissions, and prevent the coal from being too wet to maintain its ignition efficiency during the rainy season.
For water pollution protection, the Plant has constructed five wastewater treatment facilities, wastewater reuse, rainwater collection and reuse equipments. The quality of treated-wastewater meets the National Effluent Standards and can be reused for the Plant’s operation. In 2007, the facilities of the wastewater reuse processed 210,124 m3 of wastewater and the water collectors collected 223,003 m3 of water from the rain, and raw-water consumption was substantially reduced.
The Plant has set up a general industrial waste recycling yard to process solid wastes from the Plant. In 2007, the yard processed 309,471 metric tons (92.82 %) of fly ashes and lots of sewage sludge, which has been approved by the government for reuse as an additive raw material of brick.
The Plant has established a series of systems for quality control, environment management, information & communication safety, and occupational health & safety. The Plant has passed ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO27001 and OHSAS18001 certifications. Facing the fast global climate change, the Plant has been dedicatedly promoting the plan of energy conservation and emission reductions. In 2007, trees were planted over 37 hectares around the Plant. In addition, the Plant passed the greenhouse gas inventory verification (ISO14064-1) and the first phase confirmation of greenhouse gas abatement (ISO14064-2).
As a member of the global village, the Hsinta Thermal Power Plant has been undertaking a new solar photovoltaic plan fulfill its social responsibility. This plan with a installed capacity of 5.6 MW is scheduled for completion in 2011. It is estimated that 31.25 metric tons of gas emissions will be reduced annually.
